Understanding FTP, Function and How It Works

When you download a file on the internet, do you ever think how can we download the file? And, when we upload a file, how it happened? It happened because the role of FTP.

FTP or File Transfer Protocol is an Internet protocol used for data transmission in computer networks, such as uploading and downloading files are done by the FTP client and FTP server.

The FTP service can be arranged into FTP public, where anyone can access the data on the FTP server with ease. Besides being able to be set into a public FTP, FTP services can also be arranged so that not everyone has access to the data on the server, so only registered users who have permission to access these data.

FTP works using one reliable protocol for business data communication between client and server, the TCP protocol (more precisely using port number 21).

With the existence of this contract, between the client and server can perform the communication session before the data transmission takes place.

What is the Difference FTP Client and FTP Server?

Understanding FTP, Function and How It Works

FTP server is a server that is in charge of service delivery/exchange of data to FTP client on condition FTP client should ask (request) before the FTP server.

While an FTP client is a computer/device requiring data exchange services to the FTP server. After connecting to the FTP server, FTP client can make the process of downloading, uploading, etc. by permission granted by the FTP server earlier.

How it Works FTP

The only method used by the FTP is a standard authentication method, which required a username and password to access the data that exist on the FTP server.

Registered users (have a username and password) have full access to several directories and files in it so users who are registered can create, copy, move or even delete the file directories.

For how it works, first FTP client must request a connection to the FTP server, if it is connected to the FTP server, the FTP client can exchange data such as uploading and downloading data.

Benefits of FTP
  • We can exchange files between computers with ease, even if the file has a large size
  • For website owners, with FTP, they can perform backups of their website with ease
  • We can do indirect or implicit remote computer
  • FTP provides reliable data transfer and efficient.

CONCLUSION

Thus, FTP is a protocol used for transfer/exchange of data between computers (client and server), where the presence of FTP, we can upload and download files quickly.
